Tuesday. Went with Captain Brown and the state engineers over levees to be constructed at Riverton and Orange Grove. At Riverton will not lose much more than and acre of cane land. At Orange Grove at least 5 or 6 acres. Cannot be helped. New levee "absolutely and indispensably necessary." Captain Brown and his assistants Messrs. McPhail, Elam and Brown dined with me.
Wednesday. Wrote Mr. Chiapella expressing my sympathy with Mrs. Chiapella and himself at the serious accident to little George (a fall in which he cut his head and face badly) - and inviting them to come up and pay the "often talked of visit" which I had no doubt woudl do them all good. Wrote Scribner and Welford for sundry books on their recent "Special Hot List" enclosing cheque for $19.80.
Friday. Wrote Henry Buist in reply about schools in Virginia. That I had sent my boy to Colonel Jones at Hanover Academy and had not any cause to regret it and commending the school highly.
