March 18, 1884, Tuesday

Tremendous rain, thunder, lightening, rain of 5 inches.  River about 5 inches above last year's highest mark and above the highest mark of '82.  Proof of this found in fact that water began running over opening or cut in levee in front of house and had to be kept out by filling levee up.  Working along whole front levee in weak spots, especially at Clark and Orange Grove.  Wrote Mr. Beirne about the condition of the river.
Went in afternoon to see levee at Darrow.  They are working at it, but it still is in a rather precarious condition.  Small break reported at White Hall.  Fortunately the river since 10 o'clock has been calm, no wind and weather promises to be fair.  But we are having a very anxious time still.
