Cloudy to clear - mild. Better weather for can, which is beginning to improve. Visited Riverton. Marked change for the better in last few days.
Cane on Donaldson, Clark, Conway and Orange Grove all looks promising. Mr. Lawless says he has often seen it much more backward at this season.
Tried to see Mr. Miller (engineer of railroad) - but could not hear nothing of him.
River still rising - strange to say - although reported falling above for some time. By measurement it is 1 foot 9 inches below highest water mark of last year.
Saw some engineers, in employment of River Commission, who are making notes of height of water in different years. They cannot account for the present continued rise - as the water at Cairo and Memphis has been falling rapidly for some time. Must be water from the overflowed swamps flowing back into the river.
