March 27, 1883, Tuesday

Clear - calm - delightful.  Heavy white frost this morning, however, according to Mr. Lawless.  Still, more like a spring day.
Went over portion of railroad line (where it will pass the house) with Mr. Tucker.  All with whom I have talked seem to think that it will pass too near, for safety (sparks) and comfort (noise at night).
Visited Conway and Orange Grove.  They have finished planting corn at Orange Grove (last week) - not yet finished at Conway.  Have worked over cane crop first time on pretty much all the places, and commenced second working on some.
Tried to see Mr. Miller (engineer of railroad) at work on Orange Grove - but he had not yet arrived.  They are to let me know as soon as he does.
Went to store.  Strengthening levee barricade - somewhat shaken by Equinoctial Storm of Saturday.  About 30 feet of planking carried away from it (in front of store) and braces displaced - requiring to be refixed - and some additional ones added.
Corn crop on Conway will be 330 acres - more than I put it at in memorandum sent Mr. Beirne of land in corn - on all places.
