March 29, 1883, Thursday

Cloudy - cool - mild.  Good for cane.  Went to Orange Grove where they commenced drying out sugar from the hot room.  The sugar man came up on the "Cannon" which did not reach here until 7:30 this morning (delayed by fog).  So they were pretty prompt at beginning.
River still rising - at least 1 inch since yesterday.  Work on railroad at standstill.  Engineers in charge have heard nothing from Mr. Miller - resident engineer in New Orleans. He has been sick and confined to his room.
Wrote L. T. Levin hoping that since I wrote him nearly 7 weeks ago (Feb. 17) he has been unable to wind up sale of my effects in Charleston begun in October last!
Went to Orange Grove again in afternoon.
