Clear - warm in sun. Went over to the St. James in the morning and afternoon with Mr. Turcuit. He is a little behind in consequence of Mr. Babin (the previous overseer here) having left so many things undone. All the stubble fine. Fall planted also good except abouth 10 acres which were so gappy he determined by his father's advice to lie them - i.e. lay a couple of the stalks alongside of each row. Much of the seed cane is bad. Pea hay here is about out. There was a very large crop of it, but Mr. Babin failed to save much of it. He also failed to save a good deal of his corn - which was left in the field and bagged. St. James requires 1600 bushels of corn and needs oats very soon - especially as it has no hay. It also ought to have a stubble shaver - as the cane was, much of it, cut so badly by Mr. Babin that the stubble is 6 or 7 inches which interferes with hoeing and will interfere with cutting.
Left on Cannon at 12:30 at night.
