Clear - pleasant. Reached home on the Cannon at 3:15 a.m. Visited Riverton and went pretty much over all the fall planted cane with Mr. Bateman. Though it is slow in coming up - and some of it doubtless "dry rotted," still from many places where the cane has been dug up and examined, there is a fair chance that there will yet be a pretty good stand, as there seem to be plenty of sound eyes. Visited Orange Grove. They have finished planting some days.
Getting ready at Sugar House to dry sugar in the Hot Room as soon as they haul the coal. Coal boat is unloading at Houmas Store landing - some 10,000 barrels. Very fine coal.
Visited Conway. Lost a mule there, suddenly, a short time ago. Thought to be from heart disease. Orange Grove has also lost one, snagged on cart shaft from breaking of a bridge.
