March 13, 1883, Tuesday

Clear - warm. Spent last night with Mr. Tucker at New Hope and left at 7:00 am by railroad from McCall's Station for St. James places. Reached Vacherie Station about 9:00 am walked to the Armant. Went all over that place - morning and afternoon - with Mr. Beckner. Fine prospect of the coming crop. Stubble very good. About 20 acres of fall cane not very good stand.

Mr. Beckner will need 400 bu. of corn more than he first thought - making 4900 bu. instead of 4500. Determined to take it - at the price agreed upon for the other 59 cts. as the price of corn is rising - quoted at 73 cts. Mr. Beckner has not stubble shaver on either of the Armant places. But he is working his stubble thoroughly with hoes. The Armant has an abundance of Pea Hay still on hand and ought to let the St. James have some. Good hot rooms put up on front and rear places.
Slept at the St. James house. Dined with Beckner.
