Very hot and sultry.  Went over St. James crop in morning (having slept in dwelling house the night before).  Very fine crop.  The best on all the places.  Good crop of corn and peas.  Directed Mr. Turcuit to clean out pond and elevate vacuum pump and engine.    Went over Armant crop in afternoon (after dining with Mr. Buckner).  His crop wonderfully improved.  Some of his cane almost as good as St. James.  Directed him to build new stable - present one rotten, liable to tumble down any time.
