August 4, 1883, Saturday

Hot, sultry, dust awful.  Went to Orange Grove and saw agent of railroad about ramps for main road.
Betty's 15th birthday.  How the time flies.  It seems only yesterday that she was a baby.  Sent her a birthday acrostic and letter wishing her many happy returns of the day.  God bless and preserve my darling and keep her as true and good as she is now and ever has been.  A sweet pure child, affectionate, amiable and every way lovely.

Beautiful child
Everyday growing up
Toward that lovely place
That is womanhood
Yesterday you were my beautiful child
