Clear - cool - delightful. Thermometer 39 degrees at sunrise, Mr. Boote says. Frost both yesterday and this morning.
Went to Riverton with Mr. Bateman. Fall cane improving. There is a fair prospect of a stand.
Went to Donaldson for some time. "Bearing off" spring cane. More black and stiff land on Donaldson then I had supposed. But all the land on all the places is in fine order and the working of the crop is progressing satisfactorily on them all.
Went to coal boat. It has finished unloading (at Houmas Store landing) - 10,000 barrels more or less. The captain of the boat says a barrel of coal weight 180 lbs. Therefore the boat load is, say 1,800,000 lbs. or 900 tons.
Wrote Mr. Beirne giving a tabulated state of cane crop on all places. Wrote Willy (in reply).
