July 8, 1884, Tuesday

Very sultry, 98 degrees.  Wrote Mr. Beirne in reply to his last about lawyer's fees.  Went to General Brent's by appointment to meet Judge Duffel.  Took up Mr. Hanson at Darrow, at 11 A.M. and reached Ashland at 12 noon.  Judge sent an excuse.  Has fever.  Arranged for us to meet him at Absea Club tomorrow at 1 P.M.  Pleasant and nice dinner and good wines.  Burgundy and champagne.  Got home by dark.
