Heavy rain in afternoon.  Went with Mr. Chiapella to New Hope sugar house.  Saw Mr. Sandys and agreed to put a slate roof on new sugar house instead of a tin one or one of galvanized iron, of which latter he has doubts of its lasting qualities.  Slate roof will not cost over $2100 and tin would cost $1400.  Slate permanent and handsome - tin the reverse in both these respects.
