May 14, 1884, Wednesday

Violent thunderstorm, hard rain and high winds about 10 A.M.  Wrote Alfred Beckner in reply to his request for another water elevator that, in view of the heavy expenses this year, Mr. Chiapella and I did not think is desirable to buy one.
Bishop, Mr. Stuart and General Brent dined with me.  Soup, chicken.  Beef came too late for dinner.  But with lettuce, peas, potatoes, beets & rice and cheese cake and nuts, claret, sherry and champagne, everyone seemed satisfied.  We had a very pleasant dinner.
