March 29, 1884, Saturday

We heard last night of a crevasse on Ascension plantation.  Went there, starting at 8:45 AM and reaching the scene about 10:30 AM.  Gap 39 feet.  It occurred yesterday about noon.  A double cribbing was at one build around it on river side in a long horse shoe shape and filled in with earth bags.  It was pretty effectually closed by 11:00 AM today.  But an inner cribbing will be installed, just in case.  Returned home around 4:00 PM so as to relieve Mr. Beirne's anxiety.
