November 23, 1883, Friday

Slight rain, gloomy, warm.  Wrote Appleton with $3.75 for books.  Wrote Mrs. M.C. Darby, the widow of Dr. A.T. Darby, of St. Matthews Parish South Carolina, in reply to her letter asking aid for church.  Wrote Richie enclosing her letter and asking him to contribute in my behalf such sum as he thought proper.
Talked with Mr. Lawless about his leaving and told him, by Mr. Beirne's direction, that Mr. Beirne had no fault to find with him as a planter - but wanted the place run more economically.
