Cloudy. Hard rain and windy about midnight. Then cleared off. At. St. James mill all morning, some improvement, but room for more. Returned home in 2:30 pm train. Reached Houmas about 5:00 pm.
An unfortunate thing happened at Clark early this morning. The man who came from Edwards and Hauptman went into Mr. Brand's private gate instead of the big gate to which he was directed. It was bright moonlight and Mr. Brand thinks the man must have been drunk to mistake the gate. Anyway, Mr. Brand's ferocious dogs seized him as he got into the yard and tore him pretty badly, it is said. He went to Donaldsonville to return to New Orleans. Most unfortunate.
