Cloudy - 84 degrees at 2:30 P.M.  Went to Riverton and Orange Grove.  No brick yet.  They are getting on slowly at Riverton sugar house - cannot get hands to remove rubbish.  Told Mr. Bateman he had better pay $1.50 per day - as Jordan's hands now employed in removing are regular bricklayers getting $2 to $3.
Cannot imagine the cause of the delay in the arrival of the brick.
Some of the cane is getting rather grassy and needs work.  The necessary working of corn interferes with proper attention to cane.
Sent D. Appleton and Company $1.25 (in $1 bill and Post Office Stamp .25) for "Parchment Horace."
