Hard rain early in morning.
Times-Democrat of yesterday contains decision of Supreme Court of Louisiana in the matter of the "Succession of John Burnside" - ruling every point in favor of Mr. Beirne. Thus giving him everything - property of every kind. This was what all the lawyers thought would be done.
Mr. Beirne was apparently nervous and anxious or at any rate doubtful, so much so that he could not make any arrangement with me as to the compensation I was to receive (which he promised, when he urged me to give up the Presidency of the South Carolina College) should be "liberal" for looking after his interests on his 10 Louisiana Sugar Plantations. Said he would arrange it when case was decided. As it is 9 months since I resigned the Presidency, I am naturally nervous about my pecuniary position - having no income from any source - (Oak Ridge being simply a burden and expense).
River steadily - but slowly- failing, at the rate of about 2 inches per day. We give thanks sincerely for it.
