March 31, 1883, Saturday

Cloudy, warm and mild.  Good for cane.  Examined levee. River rose an inch in last 24 hours.  Visited leak in Mr. Ben Tureaud's levee.  They have boxed it and put some dirt - but the water is still flowing through.
Went to Orange Grove sugar house.  The young chaps at centrifuges, having experience, do not was the sugar uniformly.  Hence some of it comes out almost off white and some yellow.  Almost all of it, however, is good "thirds".  Of the 99 cars in the hot room they have dried out all but 20, and will finish Monday.  Have dried 33-1/2 heads and probably, the 99 cars will turn out about 46 heads.
Wrote Mr. Loving (in reply) about state of our account.  Sent J.C. Hyrich $8.30 (cheque) for stationery sent, per order, March 27th.
